Contouring saw its fair share of naysayers this year who deemed the face scultping technique passé in favour of all-natural, barely there makeup but the way I see it, if the Kardashians aren’t going anywhere, neither is contouring. For those of us for whom contouring isn’t a way of life, a fully sculpted, Instagram-ready face is maybe not something you want to sport unless you’re facing HD cameras, but a touch of shading and highlighting here and there never hurt anybody!
As far as two-toning your face goes, placement is vital. Here are the basics:
- You want to apply the darker colour in the hollows of your cheekbones, under the jawline, and around your forehead and nose.
- You want to highlight anything that catches the light naturally; cheekbones, the bit over your lips, down your nose and across your forehead.
- You want a product that’s two shades darker than your skin tone to contour with and one that's lighter than your skin tone to highlight with.
That's all it takes! Stay away from shimmery bronzers though; stick to matte ones instead, because they add more depth.
Here's a handpicked selection of products for you to try. Here's hoping you’ll soon be well on your way to being a master Kontourist (I'm advocating for that to be an actual word)!
