4 Makeup Artists On Their Fail Proof Foundations

Naaila Khan

You can have the best makeup in the world, but without a good base, aka your foundation, be sure nothing’s going to work. And with practically every brand offering full lines of base makeup, it might just take you years from now to find your perfect foundation.

Legit short cut? We asked three of the country’s best makeup artists – Bianca Hartkopf, Elton Fernandez and Sabrina Suhail – to dish out their favourite ones! These beauty gurus have the biggest celebrity faces as their palettes on the daily, and their work splashed across everywhere, withstanding arc lights and high definition cameras, so we’re pretty sure the contents of their makeup kits are definitely worth the while. Best part? They don’t discriminate. A drugstore brand is just as worthy as a top of the line one, as long as it delivers. Plus, they have keen working knowledge (and handy tricks) of everything that you put on your face.

And that’s how we ended up with this well-curated list of the best foundations; to cover up any evidence of a high-spirited night or just to get party ready (and have a high-spirited night thereafter, with no touchups required.) Take your pick, guys!

Bianca Hartkopf

1/4 GIORGIO ARMANI Face Fabric

“This is an invisible foundation with a 3D Micro fit technology that looks magical on the skin!”

2/4 BOBBI BROWN Skin Foundation Stick

“This line comes in 24 different shades that suit Indian skin tones – so you’ll definitely find one that suits you. It’s really easy to blend and also nourishes the skin. I’d recommended it for mature skin.”

3/4 CHANEL Perfection Lumière Velvet

“I love this one because it’s super lightweight and really feels like second skin. It naturally smoothens and evens out the complexion for a velvety matte finish –living up to its name. Another plus point – it’s travel-sized to carry in your handbag without breaking.”

4/4 REVLON Age Defying CC Cream

“This one’s almost like a tinted moisturizer – really light on the skin. The best bet for makeup first-timers who don’t need or want much coverage.”

Elton Fernandez

1/4 GUERLAIN Lingerie De Peau

“I’m currently loving this super light liquid foundation! They’ve got some fantastic tones for Indian skin tones as well.”

2/4 INGLOT AMC Cream Foundation

“These are beautiful! If you look through the bottle without shaking it, you’ll see these very visible blue-green pigments that mimic the nerves under your skin, so when blended in, it creates a luminous, reflective effect.”

3/4 MAYBELLINE Dream Satin Liquid foundation

“I’m quite impressed with this drugstore brand’s new foundation. They don’t have deeper shades for darker tones, but their shades suit lighter Indian skin well. A very affordable find.”

4/4 YVES SAINT LAURENT Le Tient Touche Éclat Foundation

“There are two shades that I particularly like in this range – B60 and BD60, that are great for Indian skin tones; you can use one of the two or even mix them together. I like how it gives medium coverage, blends in beautifully and looks almost next to nothing – also lasts quite long.”

Sabrina Suhail

1/4 M.A.C Mineralize Loose Powder Foundation

“This is an excellent product for those who are low on time and want a quick base. It’s a loose powder foundation, so you’d apply it over a moisturizer with the puff that comes with it or a powder brush for lighter application.”

2/4 MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Foundation

“This one’s my favourite. Considering its technology, every round pigment it contains refracts light, so when it goes over the skin, it refracts the colour and texture of the skin, making it look really natural. The pigment is golden-yellow which is excellent for Indian skin.”

3/4 URBAN DECAY Naked Skin Foundation

“I’m very picky when it comes to foundations, because if it looks like makeup, it’s a big no-no. This one, looks like skin! It’s a really nice weightless, liquid foundation.”

4/4 M.A.C Full Coverage Cream Foundation

“This one is my absolute favourite one for shoots! It’s a cream based foundation that gives medium to buildable coverage, and is only available at the M.A.C Pro Stores. They particularly have an orange shade, which is really important for people with uneven, textured skin beacause when applied below your foundation, the orange neutralizes any pigmentation and acne.”
