Gigi Hadid’s Bomb Street Looks Teach You 10 Supermodel Style Lessons

Naaila Khan

She has over 31 million Instagram followers, she was named International Model of the Year 2016 by the British Fashion Council, she’s the gorgeous face of a slew of top brands, she’s walked for every designer from Tommy Hilfiger to Chanel, and she’s all of 21.

Gigi Hadid – she with the California Girl good looks and sunny disposition – has quickly become America's sweetheart, but it’s not just thanks to her long list of accomplishments or her, well, model behaviour. The girl’s got real style!

Her cool, eclectic personal style shines through every time she sashays down the pavement, with paps documenting her every look, and fan girls taking inspiration from them. From her elevated jeans-tee uniform to her knack for longline jackets – Gigi has nailed that oh-so-coveted 2017-supermodel off-duty style, and we’re flocking to take lessons.

Grab a pad and take style notes while you click through to see Gigi Hadid’s best looks of late.

Lesson 1: Jeans + Tee = Not Boring

So you thought there was only so much you could do with the good old jeans + white tee? Not if you ask Gigi. In fact, there’s a reason this one’s number one on this list – Gigi absolutely loves her jeans + tee uniform. Except, she knows how to switch it up every single time!

Sample this time she paired the failsafe combo with a pearl braided jacket by Jonathan Simkhai, only embellishing with round sunglasses and white Reebok trainers while leaving the Miu Miu show in Paris.

Or this time she threw on a super on-trend camel velvet coat to the mix, and wore it with lace-up suede booties, a leather wrap choker and oversized sunglasses in Paris.

Or these times when she rocked a colour block fur coat and a floor-length olive green coat with her staple – you get the idea. Top your jeans + tee with a statement jacket of any kind and you’re suddenly in the supermodel league.

Lesson 2: Fur – Quickest Way to Glam

If you’ve been keeping a watch on the fall shows, you know fur is a big trend doing the rounds currently, and Gigi seems to think it’s the best thing to dress in off-duty. From a hooded cloak to a fuzzy wrap around the neck, the model sports the luxe fabric on the reg.

Like this one time she stepped out in an effortless patchwork fur coat over a gray turtleneck sweater, or this Manhattan outing when she wore a short grey Lovers + Friends furry coat.

Another time, Hadid looked cozy hitting the streets of New York, topping her black + white athleisure ensemble with an oversized furry coat, and on Valentine's Day, when she thought it would be best to brave the cold with a fuzzy luxe fur neck wrap as a glam comrade. She paired this with red velvet Kurt Geiger Carvela booties and festive sunnies by KREWE du optic, over a printed top and black calf-length jeans.

Lesson 3: Break the Monotone

While a head-to-toe monotone outfit is great and all, sometimes it’s just more fun to break up the whole act with a simpler piece. Enter: Gigi’s monotone-breaking whites and pastels. Whether a crop or an oversized turtleneck, the model clearly favours a little tease underneath her matching separates.

And we’ve got receipts: Here’s one time she stepped out in Milan in a bold, tailored coral-red pantsuit, breaking it up with a slouchy cream turtleneck sweater and wearing her matching blazer over her shoulders, with Tony Bianco ankle boots.

Another time, a fringed Gigi stepped on the Tommy x Gigi Milan red carpet (in true street style queen form, nevertheless) in a metallic light blue leather jacket and pants combo, wearing it with a white tee beneath, and Western style mules below.

Receipt 3: In a Topshop cropped turtleneck, cream bomber jacket and matching sweats, worn with white Doc Martens.

Receipt 4: In a striped blazer-bellbottomed suit, with a crop top (plus killer abs) surprise.

Lesson 4: Embrace All Denim

If anyone ever tells you that denim on denim was a) hard to do, b) boring, c) old news, do not believe them. This would just be Gigi’s PSA if she ever had to give one. Because one look at the all the all-denim looks she’s sported, and you’ll know this one’s the queen of jean.

Hadid is credited with wearing head to toe denim in many, bounteous, ingenious ways. For example, the more than few times when the most distressed, almost-shredded, frayed-hem denim was somehow made million-dollar material with the addition of a simple cut-off top.

Or that time when she wore an all-denim ensemble featuring an elongated shirt and matching blue jeans, with a white longline lapelled jacket and white sneakers.

If you’re thinking something scarcer for the summer, Gigi’s got a look sorted too. Watch her grab all the eyeballs in this short, frayed denim jacket and denim cut-offs, over a distressed sweatshirt. Seems like a beautiful ‘90s dream, doesn’t it?

Lesson 5: Camo For The Win

It might’ve had a very different origin story where it came from, but camo is all over the runways, streets and Instagrams of the most stylish folk. Gigi of course, is counted as one among them, along with the rest of her young, turnt girl squad, from Kendall Jenner to Sofia Richie.

Hadid showcased her personal style in an oatmeal-hued Stephanie Rad turtleneck sweater, olive jogger pants, and a beige pair of Tony Bianco sock boots topped off with an oversized, fur-lined camo trench, while out in Milan during Fashion Week last month.

And if you’re not a huge camo fan, Gigi’s here to tell you that a good olive green works well to create the look too – in an army green satin bomber jacket, black crop top, cargo jacket tied around the waist, leather pants, camo boots, Mansur Gavriel bag and rounded sunglasses while out in New York.

Alternatively, you can also try a sharp military-style coat like she does here for a more formal look.

Lesson 6: Double-Layer Up

So we know you probably have a strong layering game by now, considering December’s cold days, but Gigi Hadid takes layering to warmer heights. The supermodel doesn’t just wear her standard jeans + tee + statement jacket uniform most times, she likes to multiply those layers when the going gets colder.

Exhibit A: This time she wore an RtA short leather embossed moto jacket over a longline lapelled blazer (under which there was also a super trendy slogan tee). Playing with textures and silhouettes, check.

Notice how understated, little accessories add to the effect: a polished carryall, a Marc Jacobs satchel perfect for stashing in-flight necessities, super cool Quay reflectors.

Exhibit B: This time when not one, not two, but three layers of stylish insulation was just what she needed – a maroon parka over a Bassike white hoodie over a black turtleneck, worn with leather pants, red Doc Martens and red tinted sunglasses while out in New York.

Exhibit C: This time she layered a Tommy Hilfiger puffer jacket over a cozy white knit.

Lesson 7: Home Clothes Can Be Going Out Clothes

Call yourself a lazy girl when it comes to dressing up (or just in general), and unabashedly proud of it? Well, you’re in luck, because you’re basically living in the age of candid laid-back-ness, and Gigi Hadid basically slays lazy girl style like no one else.

Jumping the oh-so-tempting pyjama trend bandwagon, notice how she wears the same outfit (featuring satin Ilaria Nistri track pants, a snuggly long coat and white sneakers) twice, save for a switch of top. First, she takes an Alberta Ferretti ‘Thursday’ sweater out for a spin in Milan, and then changes into a more formal black blouse.

While she stopped at a Tommy Hilfiger store in London to promote her latest Tommy x Gigi collab another time, the model wore an embellished Tommy sweatshirt under a silver puffer coat and then famously topped her grey sweats and sneakers with an extra-long textured white coat and reflective cat-eyed Max Mara sunglasses while out in New York.

Clearly, home clothes are officially ready to go out.

Lesson 8: Leather Pants Could Be The New Jeans

One common thread, or well, fabric, in Gigi’s supermodel wardrobe? Black leather, in the form of pants, no less. The girl seems to have an excess of (presumably faux) skinnies in her cupboard. And however uncomfortable that might sound to you, it seems like Gigi has found her go-to pair of pants – they’re black stretchy leather, going from matte to glossy.

Here she is leaving Chanel's PFW show pairing her favourite patent House of CB pants with a Karl Lagerfeld graphic tee, a deconstructed denim jacket, and Doc Martens.

Then suddenly, the rocker look switched to a fierce AF one featuring an oversized Barbie-pink coat, cat-eye shades and a Rockins bandana around the neck.

Another time, she did full justice to New York style with her croc-textured leather pants and printed Tory Burch coat. Then there was also that time when she paired a glossier version of the pants with a printed pyjama shirt and leather skinnies that she topped off with a fur-lined bomber jacket.

Lesson 9: It’s Not What You Wear, It’s How You Wear It

Now that we’re fully aware of this Victoria Secret angel’s obsession with layering times ten, it’s important to note one key styling tip - a Monica Rose signature move - while channelling Gigi: it’s not just what you wear, but also how you wear it.

Take for example, the exhaustive collection of jackets she sports most times – the layered piece of clothing is always either draped over her shoulders, slouched loosely around one or both arms, tied at the waist, or draped across the midriff.

In New York City, the hot one shoulder flash accompanied an outfit comprising a T-shirt dedicated to boyfriend Zayn Malik, skinny black leather pants (of course), and a long patent leather trench coat.

In Paris, an embroidered leather jacket was worn pulled down on both sides another time, worn over a black tank top, lace-up striped pants, and mule loafers, while leaving the Giambattista Valli show.

At a red carpet, Gigi went head-to-toe in a nude Max Mara ensemble that featured metallic trench coat over a nude romper, and then showed off those shoulders in a white tank and blue camo bomber jacket while out in NYC.

Lesson 10: All Black Is Not Boring

Just glance through these all-black ensembles courtesy Gigi and tell us that black is boring. Featuring a range of textures, fabrics and combination of silhouettes (and almost always embellished with a pair of sunnies), the supermodel wears everyone’s favourite go-to colour in a variety of lookbook-worthy ways.

In perfect cool girl style, she wears round Lennon-style shades over a black turtleneck sweater, skinny jeans, suede booties, and an oversized parka while arriving to her apartment in NYC.

She then does a full athleisure getup in Tokyo, including a mesh sports bra, high-waisted shorts, thigh-high socks, leather ankle boots and a navy peacoat, all Tommy Hilfiger.

To chic things up a little bit when in Milan, she wears an H&M pinstripe corset over an oversized graphic tee, black leather leggings, lace-up boots, a netted choker, a personalized Fendi bag and rectangular Max Mara sunglasses.

And finally, in what seems like an ensemble Riri would totally approve of, Gigi steps out in badass high-waisted leather pants, a crop, and red statement sunnies to match.
